The Garden

The Manor House garden extends over three acres and enjoys a sheltered location created by the dividing walls of mellow brick. These originally formed the boundaries of the 18th century farmstead. In 1947 Lord & Lady Deramore had the vision to create a garden incorporating the Old Granary and Estate Office adjacent to the charming 18th century house.In 1968 George Smith and Brian Withill took up residence and extended these individual gardens enhancing their character. The visitor is free to explore colour themed borders featuring a vast collection of hardy perennials many of which are for sale at the conclusion of your visit.Separate gardens include the old orchard, walled white garden, two ponds, gravel garden and many enticing corners such as the Mediterranean garden. Tea and biscuits or wine may be enjoyed in the arched loggia once the old cart shed. Above this is the lecture theatre converted from the Old Granary. Here George Smith gives a thirty minute slide presentation explaining the creation of the separate gardens. During the visit you will have an opportunity to view the elegant interior of The Manor House decorated with a stunning range of fresh flowers and plant arrangements. These range from the classic and traditional to modern designed to enhance their setting, a much loved and lived in home.The plant Nursery offers the chance to take home plants admired in the garden. Hostas are a speciality in particular the much admired Hosta George Smith a natural sport of H. Siboldiana ‘Elegans’ and registered by the British Hosta & Hemerocallis Society in 1983. Geeorge Smith is proud to be one of their two Vice Presidents. Each plant is individually labeled with cultural instruction and at competitive prices.Many visitors return on an annual basis and nearly all wish they could have lingered longer as there is so much to see.

Hosta ‘George Smith’ registered by the British Hosta & Hemerocallis Society in 1983. Astrantia ‘George’s Form’ – propagated and distributed by Howard Nurseries, Wortham, Diss, Norfolk. Iris germanica ‘George Smith’ -with smokey gold and grey flowers of great distinction bred by Dr. Bianco Augusto of Gabiano, Italy.These are available in limited quantities together with a wide variety of choice herbaceous perennials especially hostas and ferns.
